// ABOUT:CONFIG TWEAKS //
SPEED UP BROWSING:
right click
-select new
—integer
type: nglayout.initialpaint.delay
set the value: 0
PIPELINING [MORE SPEED]
in the filter area search for:
network.http.pipelining
change the value to: true
network.http.proxy.pipelining
change the value to: true
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests
change the value to: 30 (or more if you’d like)
FORCE ALL WINDOWS/POP-UPS TO NEW TABS:
in the filter area search for:
browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction
change the value to: 0
SHOW MORE TABS IN FIREFOX:
in the filter area search for:
browser.tabs.tabMinWidth
change the value to: 7
This will cause more tabs to squeeze in the tab area of the browser window instead of having to scroll through them using the tab arrow buttons on the side.
Basically, the smaller the value, the smaller that squeezed tab will be. 7 is what I use.
SHOW CLOSE-TAB BUTTON ONLY ON THE FOCUSED TAB
I’ve found that this helps prevent those accidental tab closures.
in the filter area search for:
browser.tabs.closeButtons
change the value to: 0
// userChrome.css | userContent.css TWEAKS //
I like my Firefox to have a clean minimal look.
So I use the userChrome.css and userContent.css files that I’ve compiled to achieve a minimal interface (available at http://e-x-o.deviantart.com).
I also set the menu/bookmarks bars to text (no icons).
Just extract the attached css files and put them in your chrome folder located in your firefox profile folder.
// ADDED PRIVACY | SECURITY //
For additional security:
Disable Java - I almost never need it, and only enable it when I do.
Block Pop-Ups - of course.
I don’t accept cookies from sites. I create Exceptions for only the sites that I use logons. I also set the Clear Private Data option to clear every time Firefox closes with the following erase items checked:
Browsing History
Download History
Cache
Authenticated Sessions
I also usually clear everything once per week.
If you don’t wish to use the block-all-cookies/create-exceptions technique, I then suggest NOT Accepting third-party cookies and set your clear private data option to clear cookies everytime Firefox Closes.
In the Options / Advanced Tab, under Network, set the Offline Storage to “Use up to 0 MB of space for cache.
Leave “Tell me when a website asks to store data for offline use” checked.
// OTHER TIPS //
I have downloads set for “Always ask me where to save files”. I personally find that I stay more organized with my files using this option.
I find that using the “Always show tab bar” to be less distracting when browsing.
In the Options / Applications tab I’ve changed the Action for items I normally like to save directly on my computer;
for instance I’ve changed the action for mp3 content to “Save File”
another for instance I’ve changed the action for Adobe Acrobat Document (aka PDF) content to “Save File”
If a regular Google search is your thing, here is how to configure Firefox to search on Google from your address bar:
about:config into your address bar.keyword.URL.keyword.URL value and click “Modify”. Enter the following URL into the popup box (you would want to copy this URL before clicking Modify):
